Starting with the 2019-2020 school year, microtransit provider Via has licensed its routing algorthism and technology to the New York City Department of Education (DOE) in an effort to improve school bus routing. The New York City DOE is the largest school district in the country, and its bus system serves 150,000 students across 9,000 bus routes. However, its previous bus routing technology was difficult to udpate, and the service received regular complaints. With Via’s technology, buses will be routed more efficiently to avoid traffic and construction zones, and automated routes will respond to changes in students’ locations more quickly. Furthermore, students and parents will now be able to track buses using the Via platform.
This is the first such partnership for Via in the country, but it is hopeful that it will serve as a useful model for other areas.
