Insurance Code Amended to Include Peer-to-Peer Carsharing, California, 2010

  • Date Enacted: Jan 1, 2011

Summary

An Act to add Section 11580.24 to the Insurance Code, relating to motor vehicle insurance coverage.

If you want to share your car, you have to make your car part of a Personal Vehicle Sharing Program (PVSP). The PVSP provides the insurance while other people are driving your car and your primary vehicle insurance does not have to cover the other people who drive your car, and they won’t classify you as a car rental company. Effective 1/1/2011. Citation: AB 1871

Key Definitions: "The bill would define a personal vehicle sharing program as an entity facilitating personal vehicle sharing and providing automobile liability insurance coverage for a privately owned motor vehicle, as prescribed, when it is being used by a person other than the owner."
Citation: AB 1871
