New Federal Transit Administration Report, USA, 2020

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) released a report titled Mobility Performance Metrics for Integrated Mobility and Beyond in February 2020. The report outlines supplemental mobility performance metrics (MPMs) to address the growing integration of historically public-sector fixed route and speciality services with private-sector mobility on demand operations. Many of these innovative mobility on demand projects are occurring through the FTA’s Mobility on Demand (MOD) Sandbox, MOD On-Ramp, Integrated Mobility Innovation (IMI) and their most recent Accelerating Innovative Mobility (AIM) programs. The goal is for public and private sectors to be coordinated in their objectives and goals for a seamless traveler experience. While integrating mobility options is an important step for transportation to keep up with other technological advancements that travelers have come to expect, the current metrics used to measure traditional transportation does not effectively depict or measure how our multimodal mobility network is performing today. The goal of developing new performance metrics in this report is to measure how well an integrated public-private mobility system functions and performs both for individual travelers and overall travel demand. The paper offers an ‘Introduction’ to outline the research objective, approach and provide background and context, before moving into section two that explains the Development of Metrics’. The paper concludes with a section on ‘Data Assessment’ to present important data analyses such as a feasibility analysis or a gap and redundancy analysis.
