Area Regional Transit (ART) has partnered with Via, a transportation technology company, to pilot a new fare-free microtransit service, ART On-Demand. In this service, customers can request shared curb-to-curb rides to and from anywhere within a designated zone in Port St. Lucie. Customers can use a Via-supported smartphone app, a phone line, or an online web portal to book their rides in real-time. ART On-Demand currently has a designated service area of about 25 square miles. The microtransit service operates from 6 AM to 7:45 PM during the workweek and from 7 AM to 4:45 PM on Saturdays. The vans for ART On-Demand are wheelchair-accessible.
ART offers various mobility services to people across St. Lucie County, including fixed-route buses, paratransit, and subsidized taxi rides. With ART On-Demand, the agency can extend its reach and hopefully provide a new level of convenience for customers. Microtransit can be a practical shared mobility solution for suburban and lower-density communities.
