The General Services Administration (GSA) began a one-year pilot program in October 2014 to test commercial carsharing as a federal fleet solution. Four vendors —Enterprise CarShare, ZipCar, Hertz, and Carpingo— were awarded contracts for the pilot program in Washington D.C., New York City, Boston, and Chicago. They will provide carsharing services as an option for federal employees that use government vehicles and agencies will pay for the time their employees use the vehicles. The GSA manages 200,000 vehicles, one of the largest federal fleets in the U.S. government. Through carsharing, the GSA hopes to reduce the size of its fleet over time, resulting in reduced costs and improved efficiency.
