5 minutes Date Launched: Aug 5, 2019 Pilot Project Timeframe: 6 months
In partnership with microtranist provider Via, the public transit agency serving Grand Rapids, Michigan (The Rapid) has launched a 6-month on-demand ridersharing pilot program. Individuals with disabilities and seniors over 65 taking trips in the designated service area can use the Rapid On Demand app to request curbside pick-up. Trips are $3.50 and can be paid through the app, in cash, or with a GO!Bus ticket.
Funding for this pilot came in the form of a $373,782 grant through the Michigan Mobility Challenge. The service area extends from downtown Grand Rapids to the greater southeaster Grand Rapids area and Kentwood. The pilot aims to test on-demand microtransit service as a viable mobility option for seniors and persons with disabilities. It promises rides wait times of 15 minutes or less. Others involved in the pilot include representatives from the City of Grand Rapids and the Disability Advocates of Kent County.
