In September 2018, the AARP released a report exploring how emerging technology and transportation modes could expand mobility options for older Americans. The study assesses the role that shared modes, autonomous vehicles and on-demand service could play in ensuring that people who chose to not or cannot drive a private vehicle are still served by the transportation system. The authors determine that agencies need to begin embracing a more customer-oriented understanding of the suite of available transportation options, and work towards building platforms that integrate multiple modes of transportation into a single user-friendly system. The report also takes a close look at how policy makers can align policies to better support a Mobility as a Service approach.
