Sun Tran, the transit agency serving Pima County, Arizona, is replacing its former Sun Shuttle Route 410 in Marana with a curb-to-curb shared ride service. The new service, Marana/Avra Valley Dial-a-Ride, connects to the Sun Tran in Tucson, and offers a flexible option for riders, providing access to a variety of new destinations in the region. Users can book a trip to any location within the service area using the Sun Shuttle Dial-a-Ride app or through the phone, and are encouraged to schedule trips one to seven days in advance, as same-day service is limited. Ecolane is the technology vendor that supports the Sun Shuttle Dila-a-Ride app. Fares are currently waived through June 30, 2022.
Marana/Avra Valley Dial-a-Ride is an initiative that rose from community feedback. Flexible microtransit services like this are growing in popularity for many transit agencies across the country, and can help riders get to destinations not previously accessible through standard fixed-route service. Microtransit can also complement fixed-route services, addressing the first-/last-mile problem for many users. As the public transportation landscape continues to evolve, Sun Tran can serve as a model to other agencies on how to incorporate microtransit into a transportation network.
