The act passed by the Council of the District of Columbia defines an autonomous vehicle as:
“a vehicle capable of navigating District roadways and interpreting traffic-control devices without a driver actively operating of the vehicles control systems.”
The act also defines terms for various autonomous technologies and permits the operation of autonomous vehicles as long as proper safety and roadway standards are met. Liability for original equipment manufacturers is also detailed in the bill.
