Spurred by an Executive Order by Governor Charlie Baker to promote the testing of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), the City of Boston partnered with startup nuTonomy to test AVs. The preliminary tests took place in a 191-acre industrial park, allowing the vehicle to learn local signage and road markings that will be necessary for the car to take on traditional streets.
Updated May 17th: In April, 2017 the pilot program was expanded to allow nuTonomy to test AVs on streets in both the Seaport District and Fort Point. This expansion is a step towards integrating AVs into more complex streets that contain obstacles such as bridges, bike lanes and traffic circles.
