Denver residents can now receive significant discounts on electric bike purchases through a newly established Climate Action Rebates program. The city’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency offers residents ages 16 and older vouchers to apply to an eligible purchase at 13 participating shops in the Denver area. Residents can apply online to receive a $400 voucher for one e-bike or a $1,200 voucher if they are low-income. For e-cargo bikes, applicants can receive an additional $500 discount. There are no maximum or minimum prices for e-bike purchases. Residents are only eligible to receive one voucher.
The City of Denver is funding the Climate Action Rebates program through a Climate Protection Fund sales tax voters approved in 2020. Currently, the Climate Action Rebates program has a pot of $9 million that Denver residents can apply to e-bike purchases and home energy upgrades as well. E-bikes are an energy-efficient mode of transportation that can improve mobility, especially for people who cannot afford a car. The Climate Action Rebates program can serve as a model for other cities, states, and even the federal government on how providing easier access to cleaner forms of transportation is a valuable form of soft infrastructure.
