5 minutes Date Launched: Apr 19, 2022 Pilot Project Timeframe: 1 year
The Buc, a shuttle service, has relaunched as a flexible on-demand transit service in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. Customers can request shared curb-to-curb van rides throughout a designated area with this service. Rides to or from the two MARTA rail stations are fare-free, while all other rides cost $3 per rider. From Monday through Wednesday of each week, the Buc operates from 7 to 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and 3:30 to 7 PM. The Buc runs for an additional hour in the evening on Thursdays and Fridays. The microtransit service has a fleet of four Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.
Since 2003, the Buc has served Buckhead as a first-/last-mile mobility solution. Livable Buckhead, a community non-profit organization, is operating the Buc after initially planning to relaunch this service before the COVID-19 pandemic. Livable Buckhead is also looking to offset the Bucs’ tailpipe emissions by participating in the GreenerMiles program. Via is the Buc’s booking, payment, and routing technology, while the Buckhead Community Improvement District (CID) funds this microtransit service under a one-year contract. During the term of this contract, it will be valuable to observe how transforming the Buc from a shuttle to a microtransit service might increase use by commuters and residents.
