5 minutes Date Launched: Jun 3, 2022 Pilot Project Timeframe: 2 years
Greater Idaho Falls Transit (GIFT) has commenced operations as a new transit agency. At this time, GIFT offers shared point-to-point rides to and from any location within the city limits of Idaho Falls. The microtransit service, GIFT On-Demand, allows customers to book rides in real-time or up to a week in advance by mobile app or phone call. One-way rides have a standard fare of $3 per customer. Downtowner supports the booking, payment, and routing technology behind GIFT On-Demand. GIFT On-Demand has a fleet of seven ADA-compliant vehicles and operates from 5 AM to 7 PM during the workweek and from 7 AM to 9 PM on Saturdays. Plans exist to equip all vehicles with bicycle racks as well.
The Idaho Transportation Department is funding this pilot for two years with a $4,191,157 Section 5307 grant from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. GIFT replaces another agency, the Targhee Regional Public Transportation Authority, which ceased operations in May 2019. Hopefully, GIFT On-Demand can demonstrate that microtransit is a viable mobility solution for Idaho Falls, and GIFT can sustain and expand its services beyond the two-year pilot period.
