Ordinance Updating City Parking Codes, Seattle, Washington, 2018

  • Featured Overview
  • Date Enacted: Mar 21, 2018

With a stated purpose of “improving housing affordability and neighborhood livability,” the City of Seattle passed a suite of updates to their parking codes, as summarized in the attached document.  Some of the updates include:

  • Reducing parking minimums in low-income, institutional, and frequent service areas. Eliminate exceptions for parking maximums in certain areas, including Downtown
  • Allowing “flexible use parking,” which allows multi-unit residential, commercial, and industrial uses–as well as mixed-use development off-street parking in light rail station areas–to share parking. Shared facilities may be used as Park-and-Ride facilities
  • Unbundle parking space rental from larger multi-unit residential developments
  • Expand bicycle parking requirements
