Five Florida cities, Altamonte Springs, Lake Mary, Longwood, Maitland, and Sanford, have partnered with Uber to provide subsidized inter-city Uber rides to residents and visitors in central Florida. This partnership is Phase 2 of a pilot study launched by the five cities and Uber in 2016, examining travel beyond/between city boundaries. As part of this pilot, each city pays 20% of Uber fares for trips that end within their respective city limits and 25% of rides that begin or end at the SunRail station inside of their city (with the discount applied automatically when users book a ride with Uber). This innovative program aims to provide a convenient, affordable alternative to driving.
UPDATE:
Uber announced the the results of Phase 2 in July 2018. The five cities spent $63,770.71 in the first year. Phase 2 comprised 185,000 trips, at $330,000 cost over ten months. Additional details linked, below.
