The City Council of Encinitas, a beach community north of San Diego, has approved a one-year electric bikeshare pilot program. BCycle will provide and manage a fleet of 100 bicycles and 170 individual docks across ten locations, located mostly near South Coast Highway 101. The bicycles, which have an electric-assist pedal function, can be recharged at these docks. This program has come about after Encinitas and surrounding communities, like Carlsbad, Del Mar, Oceanside, and Solana Beach, terminated a bikeshare program contract with Gotcha Ride, another bikeshare operator that has since merged with Bolt Mobility, due to supply shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic. The pilot period has yet to begin.
Bikesharing programs have become increasingly popular across communities in the United States. With increasing certainty in the economy and more individuals vaccinated against COVID-19, cities are exploring ways to re-open their communities. Micromobility pilots are a convenient opportunity to improve transportation access in cities, especially in the spring and summer seasons.
