City Pilots E-Scooter Program, Appleton, WI 2021

The City of Appleton has contracted with Bird to pilot an electric scootershare program. In this pilot, Bird has deployed up to 100 scooters that customers can use within a particular zone of Appleton. Bird operates on a dockless model where customers use an app to pick up, pay for, and drop off the scooters at any location within the provider’s designated boundary in Appleton. In Appleton, Bird scooters have been available to borrow at all times of the day. Customers must be at least 18 years old and pay for the scooters at a rate of $1 plus $0.39 per minute.

In the first six months of Appleton’s pilot with Bird, 5,824 unique customers have used the scooters; Bird has identified more than 1,000 of these customers as regular commuters. These customers have completed 25,627 trips and traveled 32,513 miles over the same period. Bird estimates that its rides in Appleton have prevented about 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The City of Appleton does not pay Bird any dollars to provide this service to its residents and visitors. Beyond this pilot, Bird hopes to increase its fleet up to 200 additional scooters in Appleton. Micromobility options like Bird’s scootersharing program have the potential to alter peoples’ first- and last-mile transportation choices positively.
