5 minutes Date Launched: Jul 12, 2022
The City of Chandler, AZ, launched Chandler Flex, a new on-demand, shared ride service. The service uses Via as a technology partner, and is largely funded through a grant from the Arizona Transportation Modernization Grant Program. Users can book rides through the Via app or through the phone. Once the ride is booked, riders are directed to a “virtual bus stop” within walking distance, where a driver will meet them. Chandler Flex will be free for the general public during a promotional period; afterwards, each ride will cost $2, with an extra $1 for each additional passenger. Middle and high school students with valid student IDs will continue to be able to ride for free. The service operates Monday through Friday from 6 AM am to 9 PM.
Chandler hopes that this microtransit service will expand access to convenient, affordable, and sustainable transportation, and that it can provide more flexibility for riders than traditional fixed-route transportation.
