The Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency (TIMMA) is launching the Loop, a zero-fare autonomous shuttle service. The Loop operates from 9 AM to 6 PM every day of the week and can carry ten passengers and one attendant. Vehicles for the Loop are electric and wheelchair accessible and use a route with six stops. Shuttles are expected to have headways of 20 minutes, except from 12 to 1 PM; during that time, vehicles will arrive every 10 minutes. Vehicles are operated through Beep, and passengers can use Beep’s smartphone app to track the locations of the shuttles. Passengers can use this shuttle to transfer between a bus route that travels between Treasure Island and downtown San Francisco. Key partners in this effort, along with Beep and TIMMA, include:
TIMMA is funding this pilot project with grants from the Federal Highway Administration, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the metropolitan planning organization for the Bay Area, and SFCTA’s half-cent transportation sales tax program. AV shuttles are becoming more frequently tested in contained areas like Treasure Island. Efforts like these can more easily transport passengers across shorter distances, serving as a first- and last-mile to public transit and encouraging people to use shared mobility instead of car trips.
