Bird is providing a fleet of 50 dockless shared e-scooters for people to use in Matthews, a suburban community near Charlotte. These scooters operate within a geofenced area at a speed of up to 15 miles per hour. Discounts of 50% are available to low-income riders, Pell Grant recipients, select non-profit and community groups, veterans, and seniors. Healthcare and emergency personnel can use the Bird e-scooters at no cost.
E-scooters have held a significant presence in Charlotte; since starting in 2018, Charlotte’s e-scooter program has seen over 3.6 million trips taken and 4.1 million miles ridden. This level of ridership is estimated to have reduced car trips by over 1.6 million miles and carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 600 metric tons. Hopefully, Matthews can realize similar benefits in its community with this new e-scooter program.
