Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) is launching a MicroCAT, a microtransit service that serves the Pantops and Route 29 North areas near Charlottesville. Through MicroCAT, customers can request shared curb-to-curb rides, primarily through a smartphone app. MicroCAT’s fleet will consist of hybrid electric vehicles and wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Via will serve as the booking and routing technology vendor for MicroCAT.
CAT is able to support MicroCAT with a $1.5 million grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and a $388,000 matching grant from Albemarle County. A 2022 Albemarle County transit study identified Pantops and Route 29 North as areas needing increased transit access. With MicroCAT, CAT can test if microtransit is a viable solution for these lower-density areas of Albemarle County.
