Cruise, an autonomous vehicle (AV) company, is now offering zero-fare rides to the San Francisco public. This development has come about as Cruise staff tested the cars in the preceding weeks. Cruise’s first generation of AVs consists of electric Chevy Bolts. Community members can currently join the waitlist to request rides through Cruise’s website. Rides for Cruise can only occur between 10 PM and 6 AM.
This service appears to be another testing phase for Cruise before expanding its fleet to other cities and regions. Cruise is also receiving a significant venture capital investment of $1.35 billion from the SoftBank Vision Fund, indicating that it will likely expand its operations soon. As AV companies grow their operations, it will be important to observe how they compete with or supplement other shared mobility services like ridehailing.
