5 minutes Date Launched: Jun 17, 2022 Pilot Project Timeframe: 1 year
Freebee, a Miami-based company, is launching a fare-free microtransit service in Virginia Beach. Customers can request shared point-to-point rides within a designated service area using the Freebee smartphone app for this pilot. The fleet for this service consists of five electric Tesla Model X vehicles. At this time, Freebee is available to users between 11 AM to 11 PM, all days of the week. Operating hours can change depending on the season and demand.
This microtransit pilot resulted from the City of Virginia Beach’s Resort Area Mobility Plan, which calls for expanding shared mobility services. More broadly, the City of Virginia Beach hopes that Freebee can reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion while freeing up parking availability. The City is funding the Freebee pilot with a $550,000 budget, alongside another microtransit pilot being held elsewhere in Virginia Beach and nearby in Newport News. Freebee can help demonstrate whether microtransit is a viable shared mobility solution for the area.
