Norman On-Demand, a microtransit service, has launched in the City of Norman, Oklahoma. Through this service, customers can request shared curb-to-curb rides across Norman using a smartphone app or by calling a central booking line. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available upon request. Norman On-Demand operates from 7 PM to 1 AM, Monday through Wednesday, 7 PM to 3 AM, Thursday through Saturday, and 10 AM to 6 PM on Sundays. Standard single-ride fares are $2 plus $1 per additional passenger within a ride party. As a promotion, a customers’ first six trips are fare-free on Norman On-Demand. For students at the University of Oklahoma, rides are fare-free from 10 PM to 3 AM, Thursday through Saturday, functioning as a new version of the university’s SafeRide program. Within the service areas, customers can access the University of Oklahoma, downtown Norman, two Walmart stores, two locations through the Normal Regional Hospital system, and the Cleveland County YMCA. Via serves as the booking and routing technology vendor for Norman On-Demand.
Norman On-Demand expands shared mobility across Norman while also serving as an effort to curb drunk driving for students at the University of Oklahoma. Microtransit is a common fixture in college towns as many students also do not own personal vehicles.
