State Agency Releases Operational Data Standard, CA, 2022

The California Integrated Travel Project (Cal-ITP), a division of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), has released the Operational Data Standard (ODS). The ODS functions as a complement to the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS). GTFS outlines trip information specifically for transit riders. On the other hand, ODS aims to provide transit providers a common formula for communicating operational information, like personnel and non-revenue service.

Cal-ITP convened a working group of representatives from seventeen transit agencies, nineteen transportation technology companies, and other private and public partners to develop ODS. Data specifications and standards have improved and streamlined the information users can access in shared mobility and public transportation. ODS hopefully can contribute significantly to information sharing in public transit as well.
