VIA Link, the microtransit service for VIA Metropolitan Transit, is expanding to a third zone, serving south San Antonio, TX. With VIA Link South, transit customers can request shared curb-to-curb rides within a designated 12.52 square mile area using an app, hotline, or website. Key destinations in the VIA Link South zone include Palo Alto College, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, and VIA’s Madla Transit Center. Rides can be requested in real-time or up to one week in advance. A standard single-ride fare on VIA Link is $1.30, the same as on VIA’s fixed-route system, with discounts available to children, seniors, students, and others. Customers can pay for their fares in a smartphone app, with cash, or with a VIA pass and request transfers from their VIA Link driver to VIA’s fixed-route buses. VIA Link South operates from 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM seven days a week. Vehicles for VIA Link can carry bicycles and are wheelchair accessible. RideCo serves as the booking and routing technology vendor for this service.
VIA Metropolitan Transit supports this microtransit service after voters approved the Keep SA Moving Plan in 2020. VIA Link seeks to provide transit access to customers in areas where fixed-route transit is less feasible. An expansion into a third zone demonstrates that VIA Link has meaningful impacts in other areas of San Antonio. Hopefully, microtransit can effectively serve customers in southern San Antonio as well.
