City Contracts with BCycle and Lime to Launch Shared Micromobility Program, Boulder, CO 2021

The City of Boulder is launching a new Shared Micromobility Program. In this program, BCycle operates the bikeshare component and Lime operates the e-scooter component. Other key partners for this program include Boulder Chamber, Boulder County, and the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder). Lime will prove 200 e-scooters in East Boulder. The scooters have a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour and are geofenced, meaning that they will deactivate if taken outside of  specific zone. Scooters are available for rental between 6 AM and 11 PM. BCycle will take over full operation of the existing bikeshare system, which was previously run by Boulder Bike Sharing, a non-profit organization. As part of the Shared Micromobility Program, BCycle will convert the bikeshare system’s fleet to all pedal-assist e-bicycles and construct more docking stations all across Boulder. Helmets are not required to use the bicycles or scooters, but Lime sells helmets at a discounted rate as a form of encouragement.

This Shared Micromobility Program supports Boulder’s Transportation Master Plan, Climate Action Plan, and Comprehensive Plan, which call for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by increasing access to shared mobility options. With the return of students to CU Boulder and the increasing popularity of electric bicycles, it will be important to measure if Boulder’s Shared Micromobility Program significantly impacts peoples’ transportation choices.
