5 minutes Date Launched: Jan 5, 2022 Pilot Project Timeframe: 4 months
The City of Peoria has partnered with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) and Beep to pilot RoboRide Medical. RoboRide Medical is an autonomous shuttle service that connects residents in the Plaza Del Rio neighborhood to nearby medical facilities. This service runs on a 2.5-mile fixed-route with thirteen stops. Navya and Local Motors manufactured the electric autonomous vehicles (AVs), while Beep manages the shuttles’ technology. A professional attendant staffs the AVs while in operation, holding up to eight passengers. RoboRide Medical operates between 8 AM and 2 PM, Monday through Saturday. Up to two vehicles will run on the route at a given time with a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour. Rides are fare-free.
RoboRide Medical will help many seniors access medical services, as the Plaza Del Rio neighborhood has more than 500 senior living residences and over 100 medical facilities. For this pilot, Arizona State University partnered with the City of Peoria and MAG to study the feasibility and scalability of this service. This pilot can demonstrate the value AVs carry as a transportation solution for seniors and people with mobility challenges.
