The city of Fairfield, CT, partnered with Bird Scooters for a one-year electric scootershare pilot program with the intention of gauging community interest. The pilot is starting with 50 e-scooters, with the possibility of increasing the fleet size depending on community demand. E-scooters are available to rent through Bird’s mobile app daily from 5:00 am to midnight for a $1.20 activation fee plus an additional $.049 per minute. Riders must be over 18 years old and provide proof of age and license as well as participate in pre-ride safety training.
Bird offers community pricing for the Fairfield pilot, which includes a 50% discount to low-income riders, Pell grant recipients, select nonprofits and community organizations, veterans, and senior citizens. Bird also offers two free 30-minute rides per day to qualified healthcare and emergency workers.
Micromobility programs like Fairfield’s scootershare pilot can help communities shift away from personal automobiles for short trips, reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Fairfield officials hope that the e-scooters will be a welcome addition to the city’s transportation network.
