5 minutes Date Launched: Jul 13, 2022 Pilot Project Timeframe: 4 months
Valley Regional Transit (VRT) is partnering with Drop Mobility to pilot an electric bikeshare program in Boise called Vall-ebike. The pilot for Vall-ebike, which lasts from July 13 to October 31, 2022, provides customers with a fleet of 50 electric pedal-assist bicycles. Users can borrow the systems’ bikes at a rate of $10 per hour or through a monthly membership that costs $39. Through the monthly membership, customers can borrow Vall-ebike bicycles for one hour per day at no additional cost.
VRT supports Vall-ebike with a $50,000 grant from the Capital City Development Corporation (CCDC), a $10,000 grant from the Treasure Valley Clean Cities Coalition, and a $5,000 grant from Idaho Advocates for Community Transportation. Until September 1, CCDC will also provide up to an additional $50,000 in matching donations from external sponsorships. With its funding structures in place, this pilot appears to be an opportunity for VRT to test the viability of another agency-hosted bikeshare system. VRT discontinued the Boise GreenBike system due to the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2020. Hopefully, this new bikeshare system can operate sustainably and meaningfully improve bicycle ridership and integration with transit across Boise.
