5 minutes Date Launched: Apr 24, 2023 Pilot Project Timeframe: 6 months
PRESTO, a fare-free electric autonomous shuttle service, has launched in Bishop Ranch, an office park in San Ramon. PRESTO shuttles operate on a loop with four stops within Bishop Ranch. Customers can hail the autonomous vehicles (AVs) using a smartphone app or by simply waiting at any of the designated stops. Shuttles arrive at each stop every 20 to 25 minutes. The vehicles, which are staffed with an attendant, can carry up to eight passengers and have a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour. Beep is the supplier of the AVs for this pilot.
The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) is supporting this pilot through an $8 million Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment (ATCMTD) grant from the Federal Highway Administration. CCTA is using the same grant to fund various mobility projects through its INNOVATE 680 Program. Communities are increasingly testing AV shuttles as a first- and last-mile mobility solution. Hosting about 30,000 employees and more than 600 businesses, Bishop Ranch hopes that PRESTO can ease connections between different amenities on its campus.
