Library Provides Bikeshare Passes to Borrowers, Santa Barbara, CA, 2023

Santa Barbara Public Library members can now access the city’s bikeshare system, Santa Barbara BCycle, at no cost. Library cardholders can borrow one-week passes to the bikeshare system at the library system’s Central Library. Over the summer season, members can also borrow additional passes at the Eastside Library and a library van. These passes give users access to unlimited one-hour rides during their borrowing period. Santa Barbara BCycle has a fleet of 250 pedal-assist electric bicycles available to community members. Bosch is sponsoring this partnership between the library and bikeshare system.

Libraries often seek to provide members access to various services and amenities beyond books and media. For example, the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Library of Things program gives users access to museum passes, cooking and lab equipment, and BCycle passes. Partnerships like this can encourage users to use the bikeshare system and become more comfortable biking in their community by eliminating the cost barrier associated with bikeshare memberships.
