City Launches CraneRIDES AV Service, Altamonte Springs, FL, 2023

The City of Altamonte Springs has launched CraneRIDES, an electric autonomous shuttle service operating on a fixed route in the neighborhood of Uptown Altamonte. On CraneRIDES, passengers can board and exit the autonomous vehicles (AVs) at four different stops, which include a shopping district, a mall, a park, and a movie theater. CraneRIDES has a fleet of two vehicles, operated by Beep, that can seat eight passengers or five passengers plus one passenger in a wheelchair. During operations, vehicles are also staffed with an attendant.

Many AV projects currently are focused on transporting passengers within a relatively confined service area. With CraneRIDES, the City of Altamonte Springs and Beep can evaluate how AVs can strengthen shared mobility, bolster road safety, and replace car trips. Projects like these can offer valuable information for autonomous vehicle projects moving forward.
