Library cardholders can now borrow electronic tricycles at the Colonial Heights Library in Sacramento, California. Borrowers must be at least 18 years old and can borrow the e-trikes for three weeks. Customers receive keys, a lock, a battery, a wall charger, and a rain cover with the tricycle. The vehicles have an estimated range of 30 miles with a single charge. Sacramento Public Library expresses that the tricycles are ideal for taking on errands, such as grocery shopping. Borrowers cannot place the e-trikes on hold or reserve them beforehand.
Sacramento Public Library is funding this program with a grant from the California Energy Commission. Several library systems have piloted bicycle rental programs as part of their services. These programs can benefit borrowers seeking to use these vehicles on a short-term basis or who cannot afford their bicycles and tricycles of their own. This program can serve as a model as other library systems hopefully adopt similar programs.
