Superpedestrian, a micromobility company, donated 100 bicycles to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) middle and high school students in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and East African Community Services. East African Community Services is a local non-profit organization that serves East African immigrant and refugee communities. SDOT staff and volunteers assembled the bikes the day before the giveaway event. At the giveaway event, SDOT’s Safe Routes to School program also gave away helmets, bike locks, and lights. The outreach and giveaway was targeted toward youth based in the NewHolly neighborhood in southeast Seattle.
This type of outreach recognizes the value that biking has in enhancing mobility for historically underserved communities. Culturally competent programming and outreach is key when engaging diverse populations for shared mobility and active transportation projects.
