5 minutes Date Launched: Oct 12, 2021
The Baltimore County Government Department of Public Works and Transportation has launched the Towson Loop, a fare-free bus service. The Towson Loop has a fleet of 12 circulator shuttle buses operated by Dillon’s Bus Service, a subsidiary of Coach USA. The buses are scheduled to run every 15 to 20 minutes across two routes: the Orange Loop and the Purple Loop. Operating hours for the Towson Loop are between 6 AM and midnight during the work week and from 10 AM to midnight on Saturdays. The wheelchair-accessible buses can fit up to 25 passengers and are equipped with bike racks. The Orange and Purple Loops are designed to complement Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus routes and connect passengers to destinations like Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Goucher College, Sheppard Pratt Health Systems, St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson University, and various retail locations.
The Towson Loop is supported with both federal and county dollars. Baltimore County is starting this free transit system with the intention of providing sustainable mobility options for Towson residents and visitors. It will be important to observe how this service performs and if Baltimore County opts to expand fare-free transit to other areas in the region.
