Transportation network company (TNC) Uber released “Transit Horizons: Toward a New Model of Public Transportation”, a paper highlighting opportunities for partnerships with transit agencies. In the paper, Uber presents a 2030 vision for public transportation. Some components of this vision includes:

  1. Agencies becoming mobility managers
  2. Increased digitalization of both rider experiences and agency systems
  3. More connected, resilient, and integrated public transport system

In other parts of the paper, Uber highlights how it can work with transit agencies to provide subsidized on-demand rides to low service areas, such as with the Direct Connect program with the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority or CARTA OnDemand.

In the end, Uber asserts that it has a place in partnering with transit agencies for Mobility as a Service (MaaS) solutions. With new technologies coming about as transit ridership has decreased across the United States, transit agencies have been exploring new solutions that improve experiences for its customers. Uber is just one example of a private company looking to stake itself in the MaaS market.
