In October 2018, the US Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the USDOT co-hosted an information-gathering session to facilitate discussion among the disability community regarding AV policy, and particularly how AVs could increase employment opportunities for the transportation-disadvantaged. The results of the session were published in a report, Autonomous Vehicles: Driving Employment for People with Disabilities Information-Gathering Session Summary Report.
Discussion on AVs and the disability community focused on five themes: deployment in urban, rural and suburban areas, use for people with physical/mobility disabilities, use for people with sensory disabilities, use for people with cognitive disabilities, and ways for the federal government to leverage AV technology and establish policies that ensure AV access for all Americans.
