Waymo Offers AV Rides to Airport in Phoenix, AZ, 2022

Waymo, an autonomous vehicle (AV) company, is now offering customers rides to the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. A specific group of customers, called Trusted Testers, can use the Waymo One mobile app to request pickups and dropoffs between downtown Phoenix and the 44th Street PHX Sky Train® station at the airport. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Waymo’s fleet for this project will consist of electric Jaguar I-PACE sports utility vehicles. At first, Waymo will staff all vehicles with a specialist who sits in the driver’s seat but the company plans to remove the driver within a few weeks after starting service.

Many AV projects across the United States serve confined geographies due to the novelty of their technologies and the uncertain regulatory environment. Projects like these can demonstrate the viability of AVs and how they can advance shared mobility in communities, through serving as a form of ridehail or public transit.
