Pflugerville, a suburban community near Austin, will launch a subsidized rideshare program. Through this program, visitors and residents can request point-to-point rides through Uber and only be required to pay a small portion of the entire fare; the city pays the remainder. Rides eligible for the fare subsidy must start and end within Pflugerville city limits. Customers can also request wheelchair-accessible vehicles when using this service.
The Pflugerville City Council supports this service with a $275,000 contract with a ridesharing consultant, Uber, and Maruti, another mobility provider. As this new subsidized ridesharing service begins, Pflugerville is discontinuing its partnership with Pickup, a microtransit service provided by the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Subsidized ridesharing services have often been a valuable means of helping passengers access amenities like grocery stores, medical care, and fixed-route transit.
