The City of West Sacramento is transitioning its microtransit fleet to plug-in electric hybrid vehicles. Since May 2018, the City has partnered with Via, a transportation technology company, to offer a citywide microtransit system where customers can request shared rides to and from anywhere within West Sacramentos’ boundaries. Standard single-ride fares are $3.50, with discounts available to people with disabilities and seniors. The Via Rideshare operates from 6 AM to 11 PM during the workweek, 9 AM to 11 PM on Saturdays, and 8 AM to 8 PM on Sundays. As a promotion to celebrate this transition, customers can get free rides to and from a local farmers’ market on August 27th, the opening day, from 9 AM to 1:30 PM.
Since beginning in 2018, Via has found that its microtransit service in West Sacramento has reduced travel greenhouse gas emissions by 22% by providing residents and visitors with about 10,000 shared rides per month. West Sacramento’s transition to a hybrid electric fleet can reduce these emissions even further. With increasing political pressure to electrify vehicles, West Sacramento’s microtransit can serve as a model to other communities across the United States.
