5 minutes Date Launched: Jan 9, 2023
The Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC) has launched Calexico On Demand, a service offering shared electric curb-to-curb rides to and from anywhere within Calexico city limits. Customers can book their rides in real-time using a smartphone app or by phone. Calexico On Demand has a fleet of three electric vans that can seat up to six passengers at a time. The microtransit service operates from 6 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday. As a promotion to customers, rides are fare-free until February 9, 2023. After that, standard single-ride fares will be $2, with a discount of $1 available to people with disabilities and ages 55 or older. Customers can pay their fares with a credit or debit card through the Calexico On Demand app or with exact cash on the microtransit vehicle. Via serves as this pilot’s booking, routing, and payment technology vendor. Key destinations inside the service area for Calexico On Demand include a port of entry, a college campus, shopping districts, a library, and a high school.
ICTC is supporting this pilot with a $998,875 grant from the Clean Mobility Options Voucher Pilot Program. Calexico On Demand is an opportunity for the city to test a new shared mobility solution, as the city currently lacks a fixed-route intracity transit system. This pilot hopefully can lay a foundation for expanding shared mobility and transit services in this border community in the near future.
